How to Customize a boot image that uses Windows PE 3.1

If you want to customize a boot image that uses WinPE 3.1, there are several steps need to follow. On my following steps I am going to show you how to do it and what needs to follow.

1. First you must Install the Windows AIK on a computer that does not have another version of Windows AIK /ADK or does not have any Configuration Manager components installed.  Please use the following link to download the Windows AIK.  Download AIK.

2. Next step will be the installation of Windows AIK Supplement for Windows 7 with SP1. Download Windows AIK Supplement for Windows 7 SP1 from the Download AIK Supplement.

Where F:\ is the root directory of the ISO image

4. Next Copy the boot image which is winpe.wim from the Windows AIK installation folder (for example in my case, C:\Program Files\Windows AIK\Tools\PETools\amd64\) to a folder on the computer from which you will customize the boot image. I used the C:\WinPE as the folder name in this example.

5. Next step you have to use DISM to mount the boot image to a local Windows PE folder as follows

dism.exe /mount-wim /wimfile:C:\WinPE\winpe.wim /index:1 /mountdir:C:\Mount

Where C:\WinPE is the folder that contains the boot image and C:\Mount is the mounted folder.

6. After completing the mounting boot image step, then use DISM to add optional components to the boot image. The optional components are located in C:\Program Files \Windows AIK\Tools\PETools\amd64\WinPE_FPs\. The above path is for WinPE 3.1.

Please make a note that the path you use might be different depending on the version and installation options you choose for the Windows AIK.

Use the following commands to install the additional components:

dism.exe /image:C:\Mount /add-package /packagepath:”C:\Program Files\Windows AIK\Tools\PETools\amd64\WinPE_FPs\winpe-wmi.cab”

dism.exe /image:C:\Mount /add-package /packagepath:”C:\Program Files\Windows AIK\Tools\PETools\amd64\WinPE_FPs\winpe-scripting.cab”

dism.exe /image:C:\Mount /add-package /packagepath:”C:\Program Files\Windows AIK\Tools\PETools\amd64\WinPE_FPs\winpe-wds-tools.cab”

Where C:\Mount is the mounted folder.

7. If you want you can use the DISM to add specific drivers which you want to the boot image using the following command.

dism.exe /image:C:\Mount /add-driver /driver:< path to driver .inf file >

Where C:\WinPEMount is the mounted folder.

8. Type the following to unmount the boot image file and commit the changes.

dism.exe /unmount-wim /mountdir:C:\Mount /commit

Where C:\Mount is the mounted folder.

9. After that Add the updated boot image to the Configuration Manager and Update Distribution Points accordingly.
