Role-Based Access to System Center 2012 R2 Reporting

System Center 2012 R2 promise more surprises on RBAC comparing to what we already got in ConfigMgr 2012 SP1. One of the new enhancement we can expect is starting from System Center 2012 R2 Configuration Manager, reports are now fully enabled for role-based administration. The data for all reports included with Configuration Manager is filtered based on the permissions of the administrative user who runs the report. Administrative users with specific roles can only view information defined for their roles.

Good news is there is no additional configurations needs to do in SCCM 2012 R2 Security configuration. It’s the same way as we did it in SCCM 2012 SP1.

So in my first screen shot you can see the collections I assigned to a user “hasitha”.i assigned only two collections as indicates below.

On the below screen you can see the outcome of the reports when user hasitha logged in to the ConfigMgr console using his windows 7 desktop. So when he select the collections under drop down menu it shows only the collections assigned to user hasitha. Like in SCCM 2012 SP1 user hasitha will see all the collections created in the ConfigMgr. So if you are more focus on security for ConfigMgr reports then here the R2 is capable enough for you to do it with RBAC feature for SQL reporting.

Hope this gives you some idea about this new RBAC enhancement in SCCM 2012 R2.
